It is, of course, possible to take out hair extensions all by yourself at home only if you are a little patient. Whether your extensions are clip-ins or sew-ins, you have to be careful that you don’t damage your natural hair and the extensions are removed safely.

If you have sewn-in extensions, first gather all of your hair into a ponytail and then separate a section of your hair from the ponytail. Run your fingertips along the ridge of the braid or seam where the extension was sewn to your natural hair in order to find the end. Then, use a manicure or a needle nose scissor to isolate the thread and cut it.

Use both of your hands to gently pull the extension away from your scalp where one hand holds the roots of your natural hair to the scalp and the other firmly grasps the extension thread and pulls it in the opposite direction to unravel the sewing. Today, there are even hair products that you can use to dissolve the threads if you are not sure of using a pair of scissors.

If you have keratin, glued or tape-in extensions, oil is your best friend. Apply almond, coconut, baby or olive oil on the glue, tape or keratin bonds and give it at least 15 to 20 minutes to settle in. In case of a keratin bond, there are specially designed keratin removers available in salons which you can use and then use a dryer to heat up the bond as this makes the bond more malleable and easy to slip off.

Whatever type of extension you have, after removing them wash your hair with quality shampoo and conditioner to make sure your head does not have a few strands of artificial extensions hanging from here and there along with your natural hair.
